Steps to protect your loved ones:
Chain of command:
Days: Charge nurse => nurse manager of unit => director => administrative office
Nights/weekends: Charge Nurse => House Supervisor (give them 90 minutes to call back, they are very busy)
*Never deal with "The case manager", they are useless because they have no power.
Buzz Words to use:
"Families team of lawyers" "hire our own private advocate"
Also: you can use and request an advocate from the hospitals own service line. They are required to provide this. Its a good idea to use them because it indicates to the hospitals there is a problem.
Request a patient care conference (for the family) - best chance at getting what you want.
Other Ideas from the Interview
- Call the unit, Speak to the charge nurse ONLY
- "I am calling to let you know that I am initiating the chain of command. I am not happy with my "husbands" care. "He" is not lucid, and I am telling you that he should not be making his own medical decisions, no one is calling me from the medical team with updates or for my permission, and I feel like he is being neglected, because your not doing everything you could be doing to make sure he gets better."
- I need someone to call me back in 1 hour. And I want a plan on how we are going to rectify this situation.
2. *Set alarm, call back, say: "no one has called me back. I need to speak to your manager in the next 30 minutes. And if I dont hear back, I will come up there and we will do this in person. I respect that your busy, but I am telling you that right now my family member is not safe, and your not responding to me.
